A toast to sculpture 2012

25 January 2012 | activities

On Sunday, the 15th of January, around 160 people attended the third edition of the open day Brindis per l’Escultura organised once again by the tallerBDN, in support of the international venture promoted by the Sculpture Network to start the year off with a toast to sculpture.

Just after noon, the tallerBDN opened its main doors to the public that were welcomed by the sculpture El Oráculo de Aung San Suu Kyi (The Oracle of Aung San Suu Kyi) created by Camí in 2006 in honour of this Nobel Peace Prize winner. The sculpture was the star attraction of this year’s event echoing the voices of so many silenced sculptors, a tribute to PEACE. For sculptors of thought, for sculptors of words, for sculptors of culture, for those who inspire sculptors, for sculptors of justice, for sculptors of silence, for sculptors of coexistence, for the stonemasons of society, for the sculptors of personality... these are just some of the toasts of that day.

The artists Paul Ekaitz and Santiago Ydáñez did some artistic work live during the open day: Ydáñez painted Untitled, the installation created in 2001 by Ekaitz under the observant eye and admiration of all the visitors.

All those who came to the open day could go and have a look around the residents’ areas and the scale model exhibition of the collection titled De mar: 17 sculptural projects based on the sea that will soon be digitally edited thanks to patrons’ contributions made through the Verkami project. They also had the opportunity to see for themselves how well sculptors, galleries and institutions have responded to the campaign launched in December to donate publications to build up the existing funds of the Library at tallerBDN.

All the team at tallerBDN would like to thank everyone for coming, for their support and for making the success of the Brindis 2012 possible.

On the 2nd of January, the sculptor Camí, director of the tallerBDN, visited the Nobel Peace Prize winner (1991), Aung San Suu Kyi. They met at the headquarters of the political party that she runs, the National League for Democracy (LND) in Rangoon (Burma).

During their meeting Camí took the opportunity to give her a copy of his catalogue called Temps de Sibil·les (Time of Sibyls) edited by the Vila Casas Contemporary Art Foundation in 2006 for the exhibition dedicated to women that fight for rights and freedom. The catalogue includes the piece ’El Oráculo de Aung San Suu Kyi’ (The Oracle of Aung San Suu Kyi) made out of iron, Lebanese cedar wood and a clapper from the end of the 19th century (230 x 220 x 51 cm).
